I first visited Trinidad and Tobago 42 years ago to produce Indo-Caribbean music. My first impressions stayed with me to this day.
What a beautiful country it was. I remember banking around a sharp turn, and the vista opened up. The most amazing expanse of lush green landscape extended before me, tumbling out into a great valley between foothills. Long shadows stretched out, dancing between golden rays of the Trinidad and Tobago sunset. Tall trees stood in silhouette high up on hilltops where homes could also be seen, their lit windows punctuating the growing twilight.

The Saramacca River, Mr. Rashid Pierkhan said to me, begins its journey in the Wilhelmina Mountains of Suriname, then joins with the Coppename River, and after some 150 miles, empties it's brackish water out into the Atlantic. As I observed, I realized that the colors of where the two waters meet was one blackish and one brownish. Yet they meet. Perhaps music can be the cause for the people of this region to meet too. Soon thereafter, I released the song Kuchh Gadbad Hai.

I went on air with the world's first Indian and Indo-Caribbean satellite radio stations.
The first song I played was Jyoti Kalash Chhalke. Its poetic symbolism evoked a divine light overflowing from an urn, heralding the dawn of a brand-new day for Indians and Indo-Caribbeans living in the USA.
